Our Solution
We started this project by recruiting a working group made up of representatives from the Learning Partnerships, LSC, voluntary sector,
FE and adult education, chaired by Innovative Graphics. This group identified the categories and general criteria for the awards and
drafted proposals for the format of the scheme.
We organised two prize draw qualifying rounds - the first
in early spring and the second in mid summer. For these qualifying
rounds we developed a very simple entry form encouraging
people to tell us their learning story no matter how large
or small. The incentive was entry into the prize draw for
a prize worth £250. Entrants also received a certificate
of recognition for their entry.
These qualifying rounds were promoted by sending entry forms and promotional
materials to all learning providers in the area encouraging
them to identify potential entrants. Some press advertising
and PR was also used. Materials were provided to the Learning Partnerships
to promote the awards through their networks. PR stories were generated
from the prize draw winners who received coverage in the local press.
The working group identified entrants from these qualifying rounds who were considered worthy of special recognition. These entrants
where invited to complete an in-depth entry form for submission to the final judging panel.
We recruited a representative panel to judge all the special recognition
entries and select the finalists for the ceremony.
Finally we organised the awards ceremony to celebrate the learning success
stories our judges had identified. The event was staged as a celebration
party with an informal yet glitzy atmosphere. The event, hosted by Sam
Heywood of Viking FM, was attended by 190 guests made up of 21 finalists,
their friends, family and learning providers along with representatives
from the local learning arena. A comedian took to the stage following
the ceremony and the evening was rounded off with a VikingFM party.
